Do I have to have done any Pilates before?
No, my classes are suitable for beginners through to advanced and I provide different levels of difficulty so people can all work at their own pace within the same class
Do I need any equipment?
Yes - due to the COVID-19 pandemic you are now required to bring your own mat and any other props you might need, such as a towel to roll up
Do I need to book in, or can I just turn up?
Booking is required in all classes. Once you have a space booked, I'll keep you booked into that weekly class until you let me know you'll be stopping, so there's no need to book in every week.
Do I need to wear specialist clothing?
Not really - It’s best to wear clothing that feels comfortable and that you are free to move in, however you don't need to go out and buy expensive workout clothing
What about footwear?
Footwear is removed so you can arrive in whatever footwear you're already wearing
What if I find the exercises too difficult?
Just let me know during the class if an exercise is uncomfortable or too challenging and I will modify it for you. There's always the option to take a breather and just practice the basics while you wait to join back in
Can I hide at the back of the class and remain anonymous?
Not really! We usually position the mats in a friendly semi-circle layout so I can see everyone. If you are looking for a large class where you can hide at the back, then my classes are not for you! My groups are fairly small, and I like to get to know each of my participants so I can help them exercise at an appropriate level for them.
What level of difficulty are your classes?
All of my classes are mixed ability, including both newer members and those who've been attending for many years. I would say my classes are more at the beginner end of the scale because I'm more concerned about good technique, than pushing people beyond their capabilities. However, I can and do give people appropriate challenges when they need it!
I have a back problem can I still come to your groups?
The answer to this question is specific to each individual and best discussed over the phone, so drop me an email and we can arrange to talk. Many of my participants find Pilates to be a very useful part of their back-care program, and many are recommended to join a Pilates class by their Medical and Allied health professionals, however this would need discussing before you sign up to ensure that Pilates is a good fit in your particular case.
I have difficulty kneeling on hands and knees due to a knee or wrist problem can I still join your classes?
Absolutely! As long as there's no other medical reason for you not to attend, I can easily provide options to make positioning more comfortable or provide you with an alternative exercise so you can avoid uncomfortable positions.
I’ve been to Pilates or yoga classes before and found them to be too fast or too difficult, what makes your classes different?
Because participants complete a detailed health questionnaire on joining, and attend the same class every week, I get the chance to understand my members, and their limitations, and therefore try to tailor each session to meet their individual needs.
My main focus is to ensure, as best as possible, that participants practice their Pilates with good technique and at a level that suits them. My testimonials page illustrates this aspect of my classes.
Of course, my Physiotherapy background comes in handy too!
Can I pay as I go?
I'm afraid not, apart from your first session, which is treated as a 'one off', I then expect participants to pay up front for a half term at a time. This is to ensure I have adequate participants to cover my costs and also because learning Pilates is not a 'one off' activity. A little commitment is required in order to get the most benefit from it. Classes run term time only
What if I need to miss a class?
Missed classes cannot be refunded, however I use a system called GymCatch which allows participants to make an occasional class swap, spaces permitting
My joints feel very stiff and immobile, can I still join in?
Yes, although a certain basic level of mobility is required e.g., being able to walk, climb a flight of stairs and get on and off the floor independently. In terms of the actual movements, they can all be carried out to your own comfortable limits of joint range and therefore your movements can be as big or small as you're able to manage.
I'm in my 70's - is it too late to start Pilates now?
Not necessarily. Many of my participants began Pilates in their 70's and found it to be a great form of gentle exercise and an easy way to find a community of like-minded people. If you fall into this age group, it might be good idea to arrange a phone call to decide if my classes might be appropriate for you before you first come along. Booking is required in all classes.
What are your qualifications?
I have a CYQ level 3 in Pilates mat-work and have attended many short courses to help keep me up to date. I also hold a BSc Physiotherapy degree and a diploma in Nutrition and Lifestyle coaching. I have also completed YogaBody Breathwork Coach training, Pure stretch training and regular first aid courses
